Croatia, December 2 (CD) – Renowned Croatian conductor with an international career spanning for decades maestro Vjekoslav Sutej has died on Wednesday in Zagreb aged 59.
Maestro Sutej had a career that spanned several decades and included being the Zagreb philharmonic orchestra conductor, Dubrovnik Summer Festival music director and also enjoyed an international career. He was among other things the arts director of the Houston Grand Opera in the United States between 1992 and 1997 and collaborated as a conductor with many famous opera stars like Jose Carreras, Montserrat Caballe, and Placido Domingo.
Sutej was diagnosed with leukaemia a year and a half ago and despite the most modern methods being used in his treatment, the maestro succumbed.
Sutej is survived by his wife Ivana, six-year-old daughter Ema and three-year-old son Niksa.
