Parliament Shamefully Backs down on Tobacco Ban after Five Months

Croatia, September 25 (CD) – After less than five months in force, the Tobacco Ban Law has been eased following protests by interest groups such as restaurateurs and cafĂ© owners.

The shameful backtracking that has been voted by parliament now reinstates cigarette smoke in cafes and restaurants with certain restrictions.

Cafes under 50 square meters will have the option of choosing whether they will be smoke free or not depending on whether they can meet certain technical demands, while larger cafes and restaurants will have a designated smoking area which will not be smaller than 10 square meters and not bigger than 20 percent of the premises serving area.

The smoking areas will not have food and drinks served in them.

No one has conferred with non-smokers or their representatives on the changes to the law which reintroduces smoking, a move being an obvious attempt to appease the voting body, despite only 30 percent of smokers forcing their views on the rest of the nation.

The official explanation has been that the ban is being eased due to bad financial results suffered by restaurateurs and cafe owners over the past five months and due to problems linked to recession.

The move also brings into question whether the current government can be trusted as laws are enforced and then scrapped at the drop of a hat.

The smoking ban is still on in public buildings, but has been somewhat eased in psychiatric institutions.

Croatian Power Company Management Sacked

Croatia, September 23 (CD) – The government has sacked the whole of the Croatian Power Company (HEP) managing board together with its CEO Ivan Mravak due to embezzlement and financial scandals that have been recently unveiled.

However, those sacked should not be too worried for their future, as the are to get hefty severance pays amounting to 18 wages plus bonuses.

For example, Mravak alone, has the right to a one million kuna severance pay and others are not trailing far behind and there are several more perks like buying their official vehicles at rock bottom prices and € 60,000 life insurance policies.

Following the news of his sacking several current government ministers have leaped to Mravak’s defence like Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic and Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta, both saying Mravak was ‘sacked out of principle’.

President Stjepan Mesic reacted to the move by saying the government was right to sack the group, since they did not step down on their own.

Former PM Ivo Sanader To Attend a Summit in New York as Diplomat or NGO Leader

Croatia, September 22 (CD) – Former PM Ivo Sanader who suddenly resigned from his post at the start of July, 2009 is to attend a summit in New York, his position described as ‘diplomat’ or ‘NGO leader’ of which he is neither and also as former Croatian PM.

The summit of the Global Creative Leadership organised by the Louise Blouin McBain Foundation will also welcome presidents of Chile, Island, Polanc and Pakistan and PMs of The Netherlands, Albania and Finland.

The three-day summit will be held between September 23 and 25.

Sanader attended the same event last year as Croatia’s PM.

There is speculation that this is just one of the vehicles Sanader is using to promote his political comeback after fleeing his PM post when things got too rough for him and his future political career. At that very time Sanader said that he was leaving politics for good which it is becoming obvious now is not the case.
