Motorist Slams into Bear on the Motorway

Croatia, October 16 (CD) – A bear lost his life as a motorist on the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway slammed into in on Thursday evening, killing the animal.

The 25-year old motorist from Delnice was in shock after he had hit the bear and the animal was instantly killed.

It is not uncommon for motorists to hit animals when riding on the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway with foxes and deer being regular victims.

AB INBEV Sells Zagrebacka Pivovara Brewery

Croatia, October 16 (CD) – The AB INBEV Company has sold the Zagrebacka Pivovara brewery as part of sales of all of its breweries in central Europe.

The Zagreb-based brewery was sold to CVC Capital Fund for a total of $2.2 bln.

AB InBev will retain to right to be the first offered to buy back the brewery if case CVC decides on selling.


Ferry Damaged as it Hits the Port Area on the Island of Silba

The Jadrolinija-owned Bartol Kasic ferry linking the coastal port of Zadar to the island of Silba had run aground in the Silba port with a huge gash opening up on the vessel on Friday.

Luckily, the ferry did not take water and none of the passengers were injured.

An investigation into the incident is under way.

Croatian Parliament Discusses Changes to the Constitution

Croatia, October 14 (CD) -- The parliament is discussing the launching of the procedure for making changes to the constitution based on a government proposal.

The changes are necessary in order for Croatia to be able to close several EU entry negotiation chapters.

The changes would among other provisions enable the handing over of Croatian citizens to EU judiciary bodies once Croatia becomes a part of the Union.


The European Commission is to publish its report on Croatia’s progress in preparing for EU membership today.

It is believed the report will claim Croatia had made progress in nearly all of the EU negotiation chapters, while more needs to be done in the judiciary reforms and basic rights and the fight against corruption.

Body of Romanian Sailor Who Was Reported Missing in Ploce Last Night Recovered

Croatia, October 13 (CD) – The Ploce port authority reported on Tuesday morning that the body of a crew member of the Katharina ship reported missing on Monday evening has been found in Trpanj, on the Peljesac peninsula.
The 52-year-old Romanian national had fallen into the sea from the 146-meter-long ship on Monday evening and the search and rescue teams were immediately raised.
The ship was on its way to the northern Croatian port of Rijeka from Ploce on the Peljesac peninsula.

Train Slams into a Herd of Horses Killing Several of them

Croatia, October 13 (CD) – A motor engine with no compartments slammed into a herd of horses between the town of Karlovac and Draganic on Tuesday, brining the railway traffic to a standstill.

Several animals were instantly killed and a number had their legs tied so they could not run.

The tragedy of the herd of 15 animals could have been averted had their owner not used rope as a method of restraining the animals so they could not get away.

French Parliament Speker Lacher Visit Croatia

Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic on Monday received the President of the French Senate, Gerard Larcher, for talks on bilateral relations and Croatia's European Union aspirations. This is the first time in Croatian history that a French parliament speaker is visiting.

French parliament speaker Larcher stressed France's full support for Croatia's admission to the EU saying that his visit represented a show a support.

He said however that Croatia was facing tough hurdles, but was clearly decisive in overcoming them.

Larche went on to say that Croatia's wish to be secured a transitional period due to agriculture issues and those in the judiciary was understandable, as the EU is not just an economic union, but also a legal alliance.

Despite the economic crunch, France is among the leading investors in Croatia, but both sides expressed interest in upgrading the economic, cultural and education cooperation.

Croatian parliament speaker Luka Bebic said this was a historic first visit by a French parliament speaker to Croatia and would spark further cooperation between the two parliaments and countries overall.

Larche met with PM Jadranka Kosor, while he is to be received by president Stjepan Mesic later today.

Croatian Fisherman Dies after Being Hit by Fishing Net Wrench

Croatia, October 11 (CD) – A 50-year-old fisherman from the northern Adriatic port of Umag was killed on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a fishing net wrench on a fishing trawler.

The fisherman was discovered by two fellow fishermen who noticed the fishing boat was going round in circles.
The two were only able to establish their colleague was dead.

Craotia all but Kisses the World Soccer 2010 Championships Goodbye

Croatia, October 11 (CD) – Croatia was hoping that the England squad would beat the Ukraine team on Saturday evening, the win paving the way for Croatia to still have a chance of taking part in the 2010 World Soccer Championships in South Africa.

However, Croatia’s hopes have been dashed, as England lost to Ukraine 0-1.

The only theoretical chance for the Croatian squad to get to the Championships would be for Andorra to beat Ukraine during the upcoming match between the two.

Croatia is playing Kazakhstan on Wednesday and it is imperative for Croatia to win and then wait for the impossible to happen.
